Choral music for Advent
Performed by VOX

With the bustle and hustle of Christmas already underway, Ballarat's notable a cappella group VOX, is inviting weary people to take time out to prepare for the Christmas season by listening to a selection of beautiful choral music chosen for Advent.

VOX has developed a well-deserved reputation throughout Western Victoria for presenting exciting interpretations of stylish and challenging choral music.

The work chosen as the centrepiece for this concert is the magnificent Missa Gaudeamus, a setting for the Mass by the greatest composer of the Spanish 16th Century Tomás Luis Victoria. While his musical output was small compared to other major Renaissance composers, the music he did publish was inspirational and displayed great musical craftsmanship. The 16th Century was the golden age of polyphonic music, that is music consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody. This mass setting is based on the chant Gaudeamus Omnes, a call to rejoice for the festive season.

Also featured in the program is a set of Canticles for Advent by the contemporary Australian composer George Palmer.

VOX member Peter Freund said that while the Canticles have not been published the composer has made the score available for VOX.

"We are most grateful to George Palmer for giving us access to the score so that we can share this wonderful music, which are a lyrical setting for a cappella choir of five English songs sung at Christmas time between the 14th and 17th Centuries," Peter said.

Appropriately, as the concert is taking place in the Cathedral Church of Christ the King, The Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Chris Chataway is joining VOX to add his tenor voice to a number of the musical scores.

The Dean said that the Cathedral was delighted to be the venue for these talented performers.

"VOX regularly joins in services at the Cathedral enriching our choir with their strong, melodic voices.

"This concert will be a rewarding performance for all those who take the time to enter our Cathedral to listen to this wonderful choral music for Advent," The Dean said.
