PRESS RELEASE FROM THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF BALLARAT

13 December 2016

Christ Church St Andrew’s Project St Andrew’s Kirk

The Anglican Diocese of Ballarat has for some years been interested in the possibility of purchasing St Andrew’s Kirk in Sturt Street for use as its Cathedral and Diocesan Centre. In particular, a special group has been working over the last fifteen months, tasked with examining the opportunities and difficulties associated with such a proposal.

The Task Group has concluded that the opportunities created by a move to St Andrew’s are significant as the Diocese considers its changing role in the 21st Century and all that the increased space and scope of the new site could offer the community of Ballarat. Additionally, St Andrew’s is a wonderful building with very high heritage values. It has been a very strong part of the Church’s thinking that the Anglican Diocese could play an important role in restoring and maintaining this community and ecclesiastical landmark in Ballarat.

The Task Group has examined all the issues associated with the St Andrew’s site and, following extensive research of the engineering, heritage, planning and environment issues, believes the cost of overcoming these issues must be reflected in a lower price than the Uniting Church is seeking.

The prospects of a successful fund-raising appeal were also investigated. Such an appeal would be an important part of the process because the financial resources of the Diocese are limited and it was clear from the start that funds must never be diverted from the principal ministry function of the Church. This investigation revealed that there was a high level of support for the retention of St Andrew’s as a Church, although significantly less interest in providing the funds to do this.

The agent acting for the Uniting Church has indicated that negotiations with other parties are ongoing. Therefore, this project will now be placed on hold, but we remain open to the possibility of the Uniting Church approaching us for further discussion should they wish to do so.
