Bishop Garry writes,

I welcome the final report of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse and thank Justice Peter McClellan and the other Commissioners for their insight, fortitude and care for survivors. Even more, I recognise the courage and tenacity of the survivors of terrible abuse in telling of their experiences.

I am deeply ashamed of the ways in which some vulnerable young people were treated by those in positions of power and authority within our Church. As a Diocese we are committed to listening to and responding to survivors of abuse with apology, pastoral care, professional support and appropriate redress. I believe this is true of all parts of our Anglican Church of Australia.

My prayer is that this might be a watershed moment for the whole Australian Community as we face the darkness of our past and build churches and other institutions where the young and the vulnerable will find safe and secure places to grow and thrive.

If you need to speak to someone about your experience, please ring the Director of Professional Standards on 1800 135 246.

Garry Weatherill
Anglican Bishop of Ballarat
