Step 1: Getting Ready

  • Read these instructions

    Reading and following the instructions below as you move though the police check form is a great idea. 

    They are here to help you.

  • Identification Documents

    You will need four identification documents of different types

    You can view a list of all accepted types and categories by clicking on the button below.

    You will need to show your ID to your safe church officer or parish priest for verification.

  • The most commonly used documents are:

    1. Australian Passport or Birth Certificate
    2. Drivers Licence
    3. Medicare Card
      Working with Children Card
      Bank Card

  • Residential Addresses

    You will need to enter your residential addresses for the past five years.  Have them handy.

Step 2: Lets get started

  • Click to get started

    Click the Start Police Check Button.
    The application will start in a new tab in your browser so that you can return to these instructions.

Step 3: Choose your application type

  • Type

    Choose Volunteer or Paid Staff appropriately

  • Purpose of the Check

    Choose Clerical Ministry or Lay Ministry appropriately

Step 4: Personal information

  • Name

    Fill out your name and previous names if required

  • Current Address

    Fill out your current residential address

  • Past Redidential Addresses

    Add any previous residential addresses you have live at in the past five years

    Moved a bit? You can add more address fields by clicking the green "add additional previous address" link on the right-hand side.

  • Submit

    Click Submit to move to the next step

Step 5: Identification

  • Identification Documents

    All parish clergy and Safe Church Officers are being authorised to verify your ID in person (September 2021).  This way you don't have to scan and upload your identity documents.  So what do you do?

  • Untick the box

    Click Continue to move to the next step

Step 6: Let's Finish Up

  • Continue

    This page will ask you to enter your Drivers Licence and/or Passport Numbers.

    Unfortunately, this facility doesn't work.  We'll do this manually when your Identity Documents are verified.

    So just click Skip at the bottom of the page

  • That's it...for this part anyway.

What happens Next?

  • Verifying you Identity Documents

    Your Parish Priest or Safe Church Officer may have been given the facility to verify your Identity Documents in person.

    If this is the case, show them your documents so that they can say they have sighted them.

    It's a great idea to write down your drivers licence number and/or passport number to give to them, as they will need to enter them into the system.

    If they can't verify your ID, you will receive a phone call from the Diocesan Safe Church Officer.

  • The Result

    The result of your police check will be sent only to the Diocesan Safe Church Officer.  It normally takes 1-3 days. 

    It will then compiled with your Clearance for Ministry application.

Identification Documents

Four different pieces of identification are required for a Police Check application.

  • 1 Commencement of Identity document
  • 1 Primary document
  • 2 Secondary documents

If all four cannot be produced, please contact the Diocesan Safe Church Officer.

The most commonly used types are listed at the top of each list.

Commencement of Identity Documents
Quantity: 1
  • Full Australian birth certificate (not an extract or birth card)
  • Current Australian passport

 

  • Australian visa current at time of entry to Australia as a resident or tourist
  • ImmiCard issued by Department of Home Affairs (previously the Department of Immigration and Border Protection) that enables the cardholder to prove their visa and/or migration status and enroll in services
  • Certificate of identity issued by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to refugees and non-Australian citizens for entry to Australia
  • Document of identity issued by DFAT to Australian citizens or persons who have the nationality of a Commonwealth country for travel purposes
  • Certificate of evidence of resident status such as citizenship certificate or equivalent
Primary Use Documents
Quantity: 1
  • Current Australian drivers licence, learner permit or provisional licence issued by a state or territory, showing a signature and/or photo and the same name as claimed

 

  • Australian marriage certificate issued by a state or territory (church or celebrant-issued certificates are not accepted)
  • Current passport issued by a country other than Australia with a valid entry stamp or visa
  • Current proof of age or photo identity card issued by an Australian Government agency in the name of the applicant, with a signature and photo
  • Current shooters or firearms licence showing a signature and photo (not minor or junior permit or licence)
  • For persons under 18 years of age with no other Primary Use in Community Documents, a current student identification card with a signature or photo.
Secondary Use Documents
Quantity: 2
  • Medicare card
  • Photo identity card issued by the Australian Government or a state or territory government ie. Working with Children Card
  • Bank card/Credit card

 

  • Enrolment with the Australian Electoral Commission
  • Certificate of identity issued by DFAT
  • Document of identity issued by DFAT
  • Convention travel document secondary (United Nations) issued by DFAT
  • Foreign government issued documents (for example, drivers licence)
  • Security guard or crowd control photo licence
  • Evidence of right to an Australian government benefit (Centrelink or Veterans Affairs)
  • Consular photo identity card issued by DFAT
  • Photo identity card issued to an officer by a police force
  • Photo identity card issued by the Australian Defence Force
  • Aviation Security Identification Card
  • Maritime Security Identification card
  • Credit reference check
  • Australian tertiary student photo identity document
  • Australian secondary student photo identity document
  • Certified academic transcript from an Australian university
  • Trusted referees report
